3 challenges

Awareness of the basic challenges VCOs sometimes face which can have an affect on or be affected by ICT. (e.g. lack of ICT knowledge and leadership, staff turnover, working with a complex mix of stakeholders, change management effects, legislative, dependence on a single funding stream, etc)

Competency 3 Resources

  1. UK Voluntary Sector Workforce Almanac 2007 – published by the Workforce Hub, this report covers employment, workplace and workforce in the VCS. It’s a long report, but learners should at least read the executive summmary to give a flavour of the reach of the VCS in the UK and the issues faced. (pdf file 2.6Mb)
  2. The ICT Hub baseline report 2007 is a key document covering ICT policy and strategy, accessibility and training and well as conducting an in-depth study of technologies and technical support available.
  3. Accessing and Using ICT In Lambeth – a study undertaken by Lasa in 2008 which compares a London Borough with the ICT Hub 2007 baseline.
  4. YouthNet’s report IT Infrastructure in the Voluntary and Community Sector from 2006 highlights the basic challenges.
  5. Civil Technologies: The Values of NonProfit ICT Use – a US study from 2005 on the challenges and values of ICT in civil society by Mark Surman and Ken Jordan. Fairly long but worth at least reading the section of primary challenges which are identified as planning capacity, resources and research and evaluation.
  6. The UK Voluntary Sector Skills Survey from 2007 carried out by the Workforce Hub is a long but useful overview of the skills gaps facing organisations.  Strategic use of ICT and ICT support are both high on the agenda. (pdf file 3.23Mb)
