  1. A set of BusinessLink articles on systems employed by small businesses but equally valid for the VCS – includes accounting, payroll, databases, open source.
  2. AbilityNet have a range of guides dealing with accessibility – Easy Free and Quick ICT Accessibility (pdf file 492Kb) explains why accessibility is vital to an organisation’s work, clarifies legal obligations, and explains how easy it is to make simple practical improvements to accessibility.
    The Web Accessibility Pack for Voluntary and Community Organisations (pdf file 1.7Mb)is a practical introduction to web accessibility. It explains what web accessibility is, the benefits and what the law says, as well as giving guidance for web managers, commissioners, designers and developers.
  3. Produced by NOSI (NonProfit Open Source Initiative) the report Choosing and Using Free and Open Source Software: A Primer for NonProfits is a very useful introduction to FOSS.
  4. TechSoup’s Learning Centre has plenty of useful information about specific technologies used by non-profits including up to date articles on current software
  5. Lasa Computanews ICT Security Guide (pdf file 2Mb) covers a wide range of ICT security including assessing the risks and policies needed, how computer security is affected by people and the environment in which it used and how to secure technology assets.
  6. Idealware have published the Field Guide to Software for Nonprofits. Written by Laura Quinn, the 84 page book includes an overview of 35 different types of software, helping you to understand what each is, how it fits in with your needs, how much you might expect to pay, and some of the most common vendors in the area.  Available for £12.51 from Lulu.com

  • A Guide to Managing ICT in the Voluntary and Community Sector - an ICT Hub publication – (pdf file 1.6Mb). An excellent overview of voluntary sector ICT management aimed at staff within organisations but equally appropriate and useful for learners. Also available as hard copy, Lasa have a stock.
  • Idealware – www.idealware.org – has a vast repository of reviews of software and systems for the VCS along with running webinars and a email newsletter.
